On the Homotopy of Finite Cw-complexes with Polycyclic Fundamental Group

Let X be a finite connected CW-complex of dimension q. If its fundamental group π1(X) is polycyclic of Hirsch number h > q, we show that at least one homotopy group πi(X) is not finitely generated. If h = q or h = q − 1 the same conclusion holds unless X is an Eilenberg-McLane space K(π1(X), 1). Mathematics subject classification : 57R70; 55P15; 57Q10.

The Fundamental Group

The focus of this exposition is the fundamental group of a topological space. The paper begins by defining paths and homotopy, and proceeds to construct the fundamental group. Later, attention turns to the consequences of the construction, in particular to the fundamental group of S1 and Van Kampen’s Theorem.

Modelling fundamental 2-categories for directed homotopy (*)

Directed Algebraic Topology is a recent field, deeply linked with ordinary and higher dimensional Category Theory. A 'directed space', e.g. an ordered topological space, has directed homotopies (generally non reversible) and fundamental n-categories (replacing the fundamental ngroupoids of the classical case). Finding a simple model of the latter is a non-trivial problem, whose solution gives r...

The Fundamental Group

This is the next article in a series devoted to the homotopy theory (following [11] and [12]). The concept of fundamental groups of pointed topological spaces has been introduced. Isomorphism of fundamental groups defined with respect to different points belonging to the same component has been stated. Triviality of fundamental group(s) of R n has been shown. the terminology and notation for th...

Toward a Fundamental Groupoid for the Stable Homotopy Category

This very speculative talk suggests that a theory of fundamental groupoids for tensor triangulated categories could be used to describe the ring of integers as the singular fiber in a family of ring-spectra parametrized by a structure space for the stable homotopy category, and that Bousfield localization might be part of a theory of ‘nearby’ cycles for stacks or orbifolds.
